A Gin Rickey is a light and refreshing mixed drink that is low in calories but not in flavor. With zero sugar and only three ingredients, it’s a quite invigorating highball drink that is so easy to mix up and tweak to your taste.

The origin of the drink dates back to the 19th century in Washington D.C. and is named after lobbyist Joe Rickey. It’s even mentioned in the 1920’s novel Great Gatsby. It’s a great bubbly cocktail for any gin lover!

Gin Rickey Recipe

Choose your favorite gin (although watered down, the flavor of the gin is hard to mask so a good quality gin is recommended). Add two ounces of gin to a glass filled with ice followed by a healthy dose of lime juice, then top with chilled club soda water to fill the glass. Lime wedges make the perfect garnish and can add a little extra tartness if that fits your taste.

How to Make a Gin Rickey Cocktail

No cocktail shaker needed for this one. Like most highball cocktails, it’s mixed right in the glass! To a glass filled with ice, add about two ounces of your good quality gin and a heavy splash of lime juice over the ice, then fill the glass with club soda. Stir to mix and garnish with a lime wedge.

How to Serve

Serve your Gin Rickey in a highball glass with lots of ice. Cut up some limes for garnish.

Gin and Tonic Vs. Gin Rickey

If you love the Gin and Tonic but are counting those pesky calories, you will love this Gin Rickey recipe. Instead of using sweetened lime juice and tonic water like in the Gin and Tonic, this recipe uses unsweetened lime juice and club soda. Trust me, the flavor will still knock your socks off!
