The Cuba Libre is a simple cocktail very similar to a Rum a Coke, but with the intentional addition of lime juice as the distinguishing factor. The tart lime juice brightens the drink and helps to balance out the sweetness of the other ingredients. Cuba Libre means “free Cuba” in Spanish, a phrase popular nearing the end of the Spanish-American war.

As you can guess from the name, the cocktail originates from Cuba, like the Daiquiri and MOJITO, other Cuban classics. With just three ingredients and having withstood the test of time since the 1900s, this delicious drink is here to stay.

Cuba Libre Recipe

To make a Cuba Libre at home you will need just three ingredients, and you probably already have them at home!

  • 2 ounces of rum (light or dark)
  • 4 ounces of coke (or enough to top your glass)
  • 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice

How to Make a Cuba Libre

Simply add your rum, lime juice, and coke to a glass filled with ice, garnish with a slice of lime, and enjoy!

How to Serve

A Cuba Libre is best enjoyed cold. Using chilled ingredients and lots of ice will ensure the drink is at prime temperature. Serve in a glass tumbler and garnish with a lime wedge.
