The Dark and Stormy is a cocktail that stands out with its bold flavors. Perfect for a warm summer evening or a cozy night in, this drink combines the rich, spiced notes of dark rum with the sharp, refreshing bite of ginger beer, all finished off with a splash of lime.
Traditionally made with dark rum, ginger beer, and lime juice, this cocktail is actually the national drink of Bermuda. It’s very similar to the Original Moscow Mule, employing dark rum instead of vodka. It is easy to create this classic cocktail at home with some tips to ensure your Dark and Stormy cocktail is perfectly balanced and delicious every time.
Dark and Stormy Ingredients
With the right balance of rich dark rum, spicy ginger beer, and a hint of lime, you’ll have a drink that’s as bold and refreshing as its name suggests. Be sure to scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post for the full recipe.
- Dark rum: The star of the Dark and Stormy, dark rum provides a rich, complex flavor with notes of caramel, molasses, and spice. I love Captain Morgan’s in this recipe, but you can use any dark rum you like.
- Lime juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice adds a bright, tangy element that balances the other ingredients.
- Ginger beer: Ginger beer adds a zesty, spicy kick that perfectly complements the deep flavors of the rum. Read more on your options below.
How to Make a Dark and Stormy Drink
This cocktail comes together right in the glass you will drink it from! For the full recipe including all measurements, see the recipe card below.
- Fill a glass with ice.
- Add all ingredients to the glass.
- Give it a gentle stir and enjoy!
Ginger Beer
A key ingredient of this cocktail as well as Moscow mule recipes is a good ginger beer. Since this recipe has only three ingredients, you will want to choose one that is good quality. You can find ginger beers that contain alcohol and ginger beers that are nonalcoholic, and either can be used in this cocktail. We love to use Crabbie’s, which contains alcohol.
For a sweeter and less boozy drink, ginger ale can be used instead of ginger beer.
