A Grasshopper cocktail is the perfect ice cream drink. This minty cocktail, made with ice cream, vanilla vodka, and Creme de Menthe is like dessert in a glass.
The original Grasshopper is believed to have come from a small bar in New Orleans called Tujague’s in the early 1900s for a cocktail competition in New York City. Most often, the grasshopper cocktail recipe is made with green Creme de Menthe and heavy cream and is served as an after-dinner drink. You can find that type of classic Grasshopper recipe here. This frozen Grasshopper ice cream cocktail is like an adult milkshake and a nod to Wisconsin, where we do everything a little richer and with a little more dairy.
Grasshopper Cocktail Ingredients
You only need four ingredients for this vanilla-mint dessert cocktail. For the ingredient measurements, see the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
- Vanilla ice cream: The special ingredient in this recipe that makes this cocktail extra creamy and delicious.
- Green Crème de Menthe: The classic star of this dessert drink is this mint liqueur, keeping with the traditional Grasshopper recipe. The green and clear versions of this ingredient would work in this recipe, though we chose green for the color of this cocktail.
- Vanilla vodka: A staple vodka you want in your bar for other cocktails like our delicious Key Lime Martini, the vanilla flavor complements the mint perfectly.
- Milk: Use whatever milk you have in your fridge.
How to Make a Grasshopper Drink
These creme de menthe drinks come together in just a few simple steps, as briefly outlined here. For the full recipe, scroll down to the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
- Prepare your glasses. Line the glasses with hot fudge sauce. We find that Godiva’s brand is nice and thick and will cling to the sides of your glasses. See more on how to do this below.
- Blend the ingredients. In a blender, combine the ice cream, vanilla vodka, Creme de Menthe for that beautiful green color, and milk. Blend until smooth.
- Pour and garnish. Pour the drink into the prepared glasses and garnish with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles.

How to Serve
The Grasshopper drink recipe is most often served in a stemmed glass, such as a martini glass, coupe glass, or wine glass. We like to garnish this drink with chocolate along the sides of the glass, a little whipped cream and some chocolate shavings or sprinkles on top. To add chocolate to the sides of your glass, follow these simple steps:
- Take an empty glass and drizzle syrup into it.
- Holding the glass by the stem, turn it so that the chocolate goes around the whole glass.
- Put glasses in the freezer while you mix your ingredients to help it set.
Variations
- To keep your drink colder longer, start with a chilled cocktail glass. You can even line the glass with the chocolate drizzle first and then put the glasses in the freezer for a really clean look.
- If you want it even more minty, you could use mint chocolate chip ice cream instead of vanilla.
- To make it a little more chocolate flavored you could add half an ounce of creme de cacao or white crème de cacao.
