Made with three ingredients, the Irish Slammer is a cocktail that is tasty and fun to serve. Sometimes known as the Dublin Drop, the drink is achieved by dropping a shot glass of whiskey and Baileys into a glass of beer and drinking it quickly. Commonly ordered at bars, the combination of three Irish ingredients makes it easy and simple to make an Irish Slammer at home.

Rich and full-bodied combined with a creamy and slightly bitter kick make this party drink so enjoyable. While the difficulty may lie in how quickly the drink is chugged, it is balanced and smooth. The Irish Slammer is one of the most popular bomb shots, like the Flaming Dr. Pepper.

What’s in an Irish Slammer

The trifecta of Irish Slammer ingredients is simple. If you don’t already have them at home, it is worth getting them! Here is what you need to make an Irish Slammer at home:

  • Bailey’s Irish Cream. A cream liqueur flavored with Irish cream, cocoa, and Irish whiskey.
  • Jameson Irish Whiskey. Jameson is the most popular whiskey used in an Irish Slammer, but you can also experiment with other Irish whiskeys.
  • Guinness Stout. An Irish dry stout made with roasted barley, giving the beer a deep color and caramelized flavor.

How to Make an Irish Slammer

  1. Pour the Baileys into a shot glass.
  2. Layer the whiskey on top of the Baileys by pouring it slowly over the back of a spoon into the shot glass.
  3. Fill a pint glass half full with Guinness.
  4. Drop the shot into the beer.
  5. Drink quickly and enjoy!

How to Serve

Sometimes the shot glass is skipped and the ingredients are added directly to the pint glass. It is important to drink quickly once the ingredients are combined due to the reaction of the acidic beer causing the cream of the Baileys to curdle if left for even a minute.

What Is The History Of The Irish Slammer

This is an American drink and should not be ordered in Ireland. The name comes from the Irish ingredients and the effect of the shot glass of liquor being dropped into the glass of Guinness. Due to the controversy of its name, it is more routinely and safely referenced as the alternative names of Irish Slammer or Dublin Drop. Negative connotations of the drink have led to the inventor regretting the name of his recipe once the drink became popular.
