Margarita Mix Ingredients
Here is what makes up the delicious homemade mix! For the full recipe including all measurements, see the recipe card below.
- Sugar: Creates a simple syrup when combined with water on the stovetop that adds the perfect layer of sweetness to balance the acidity of the lemon and lime juice.
- Lemons: Juice squeezed from fresh lemons will give the classic margarita mix the freshest flavor.
- Limes: The combination of lemon and lime juice gives this mix the best citrus flavor. Like the lemons, we always recommend getting juice from fresh limes. See our tips for getting the most juice from your lemons and limes below.
Getting Juice From Lemons and Limes
Freshly squeezed lime and lemon juices are what sets this mix recipe apart. We highly recommend buying lemons and lemons and getting the juice from them compared to buying just the juice.
To get the most juice from your fruit, roll the fruit between your hand and the counter a few times. You can also put the fruit in the microwave for 20 seconds before getting the juice. Using a citrus juicer is a great way to get the most juice from your lemons and limes. I will link one below that we love.

How to Make Margaritas with Mix
Making your own margarita mix can be used as the base of any margarita. It can be as simple as just adding tequila and triple sec or as fancy as making it blended and flavored.
This is our favorite traditional margarita recipe. For one margarita, combine the following ingredients over ice and stir gently for a margarita on the rocks, or combine them in a blender and blend until smooth for a frozen drink.
- 1 1/2 ounces of the best margarita mix
- 1 1/2 ounces of tequila
- 3/4 ounce triple sec or orange liqueur
To make a pitcher of margaritas, simply increase ingredients to 1 1/4 cups margarita mix, 1 1/4 cups tequila, and 1/2 cup triple sec. Don’t forget to salt (or sugar) to the rim of your glasses!
Storing Margarita Mix
The prepared mix can be used right away, stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator for one week, or in the freezer for up to one month. When you are ready to make a margarita, thaw the amount of mix that you want to use.
