The creamy and decadent Mudslide is the perfect balance of rich and boozy. Made with just four ingredients, you’ll really treat yourself with this dessert cocktail recipe. While commonly thought of as a boozy milkshake, this recipe flaunts the flavor of the spirits and is sure to be your new guilty pleasure.

The mudslide drink has become a classic and originated back in the 1970s. The story goes that a customer ordered a White Russian, but the bartender adjusted the recipe to include ingredients he had on hand, including Irish cream instead of regular cream. The Kahlua mudslide drink recipe was born and became an instant hit. While versions of the cocktail have been sweetened up by adding ice cream to create more of an adult milkshake, this classic dessert martini is the perfect balance of sophisticated and decadent.

Mudslide Ingredients

An equal ratio of ingredients combine in this classic mudslide recipe. Here is what makes up the mudslide cocktail. For the full list of ingredients and measurements, see the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  • Vodka: Top-shelf vodka isn’t necessary for this recipe, so no need to break the bank. A mid-range vodka like Tito’s works great.
  • Kahlúa: Coffee liqueur that is a key ingredient in the White Russian.
  • Baileys Irish Cream: Adds a sweet, boozy, creamy layer to the drink.
  • Heavy cream: Adds an extra layer of creaminess in the classic Mudslide, and vanilla ice cream is used in the frozen mudslide. See more on this option below.

How to Make a Mudslide Drink

While the drink looks and tastes extravagant, it is very simple to make at home. Since you need one ounce of each ingredient, the recipe is easy to memorize once you know the ingredients. For the full recipe and all measurements, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  1. Combine the ingredients. Add vodka, Kahlua, Baileys, and heavy cream to a cocktail shaker with ice.
  2. Shake it up. Shake vigorously until the outside of the shaker is cold and the ingredients are well combined.
  3. Strain into a chilled martini glass.
  4. Garnish. Add chocolate shavings and enjoy!

How to Serve

Serve your mudslide immediately in a chilled martini glass to enjoy it while it is icy cold. To make your glass cold, either put it in the freezer or fill it with ice and water while you make the cocktail. When you are ready to strain the mixture into the glass, dump the ice and water out and pour your ingredients into your chilled glass. Chocolate shavings dress up the presentation of the cocktail as well as add additional flavor and a sweet aroma. For an extra special look, drizzle some chocolate syrup in the glass before pouring in the mudslide.
